This is the most important work on political philosophy by the English philosopher John Locke. It was published in 1690. In the first essay he refutes R. Filmer's theory of the divine right of kings, and in the second essay he develops the basic principles of civil democracy while refuting the absolutist theory of government set out in works such as Hobbes's Leviathan. It provided theoretical support for the Glorious Revolution and influenced the later United States Constitution and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man.
