An annual plant of the Asteraceae family, native to tropical America. It is a horticultural plant, but has become wild and weedy in warm regions. It grows to about 60 cm tall and is covered with soft hairs. It produces several 4-8 mm blue-purple flower heads similar to thistles. The dwarf species is 15-18 cm tall and is used in flower beds, while the normal species is used for cut flowers.
