…He graduated from the University of London in 1924, and in 1944 he became a member of the Warburg Institute attached to the same university, where he attempted to elucidate the history of the Renaissance spirit using the Neoplatonic view of the universe as a clue. After reexamining the philosophical role of Renaissance magic (Hermeticism) in “Giordano Bruno and the Genealogy of Hermeticism” (1964), he published the famous “Mnemonics” (1966), which explored the combination of mnemonics and the view of the universe in the structure of the “Theatre of the Earth,” where Shakespeare often performed. In “The Rosicrucian Enlightenment” (1975), he clarified the influence of magical utopism on the scientific revolution of the 17th century. It is significant that he placed ideas that had previously only been treated in a narrow framework within the orthodox history of European thought. …
