Rancagua (English spelling)
A city in central Chile. It is located about 70 km south of the capital Santiago, at the western foot of the Andes, overlooking the Cachapoal River. Founded in 1743. It is a commercial and industrial center in a fertile agricultural and pastoral region, distributing grapes, wheat, barley, beans, and cattle, and has industries such as meat processing, flour milling, and canned fruit and vegetables. It is also the terminus of a mine railway that runs from the large El Teniente copper mine, about 40 km northeast, and has a copper smelter in the city. It was one of the fiercest battlefields during the War of Independence, and in October 1814, the independence army led by B. O'Higgins was defeated by the Spanish colonial government forces after a fierce defense of the city. The Pan-American Highway and the Trans-Chilean Railway pass through the city, connecting it to the capital. Population: 190,379 (estimated 1992).
