An old town in Hiba County, in the northeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, bordering Okayama and Tottori Prefectures. The central settlement is at the bottom of a small basin on the Tojo River, a tributary of the Takahashi River, and is the transportation and commercial center along the Geibi Line. The town produces rice, eggs, beef cattle, raw milk, and limestone. Taishaku Gorge in the south and Mt. Dogo in the north belong to the Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. The Chugoku Expressway runs through the town. In March 2005, Hiwa Town was incorporated into Shobara City along with Soryo Town in Kono County, Saijo Town in Hiba County, Kuchiwa Town, and Koya Town. 304.92 km2 . Population: 10,372 (2003). 広島県北東部,岡山・鳥取両県に接する比婆(ひば)郡の旧町。中心集落は高梁(たかはし)川支流東城川の小盆地底にあり,芸備線に沿う交通・商業の中心。米,鶏卵,肉牛,生乳,石灰石を産する。南部の帝釈(たいしゃく)峡,北部の道後山は比婆道後帝釈(ひばどうごたいしゃく)国定公園に属する。中国自動車道が通じる。2005年3月甲奴郡総領町,比婆郡西城町,口和町,高野町と,比和町庄原市へ編入。304.92km2。1万372人(2003)。
