A port city on the Indian Ocean. The capital of Somalia. Also known as Mogadishu. It grew from trade with the Indian Ocean from around the 10th century, and many Arabs arrived. In the first half of the 15th century, a detachment of Zheng He's expedition to the South Seas called at the port, and in 1498 Vasco da Gama also stopped there on his return journey. In the 1870s, it was occupied by the Sultan of Zanzibar, but in 1905 it became the capital of an Italian colony (Italian Somaliland). During World War II, it was occupied by the British, and when Somalia gained independence in 1960, it became the capital. It was also the site of the Somali Civil War that intensified in 1992.
