Secondary cosmic rays

...A general term for high-energy (10 ⁸ eV or more) radiation that travels almost isotropically through space at the speed of light, and radiation generated when it collides with atomic nuclei that make up the air in the Earth's atmosphere. The former are called primary cosmic rays, and the latter are called secondary cosmic rays. The main components of primary cosmic rays are various bare atomic nuclei, and when compared at the same energy per nucleon, 94.5% are protons (hydrogen nuclei), 5% are helium nuclei (alpha particles), and the remaining 0.5% are atomic nuclei heavier than lithium (comparatively more nuclei of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, etc., but even heavier ones are also included). ...
