Toji Buddhist sculptor

Japanese: 東寺仏師職 - とうじぶっししき
Toji Buddhist sculptor
When Unkei created the Nio statues at the Nandaimon Gate of To-ji Temple (Kyoogokoku-ji Temple) in Kyoto in 1198 (Kenkyu 9), he was the first to be appointed as the Great Buddha Sculptor of To-ji Temple, and since then, the position has been passed down to sculptors of the Kei school, which is the lineage of Unkei. Along with the sculptor position at Kofuku-ji Temple, the center of the Nara region, Unkei is considered the most traditional and authoritative Buddhist sculptor position, and its history can be traced back to his son Tankei and grandson Koen, and to the 26th head of the Kei school, Kosuke, who died in 1689 (Genroku 2) during the Edo period.
