[Birth] Cheoljong 13 (1862). Gyeonggi-do, Icheon
[Died] November 25, 1916. Novelist and journalist during the Korean Empire in Seoul. Pen name: Kikuchu. Along with Yi Hae-jo and Choi Chan-sik, he is one of the leading writers of new novels. In 1900, he studied political science and law as a government student in Korea. He was fond of Japanese new-school drama and novels, and after returning to Korea, he became the editor-in-chief of Mansebo and serialized a new novel, Tears of Blood (06), in the same paper. This novel was a complete departure from the style and theme of traditional "classical novels," and marked the beginning of modern Korean literature. In 1911, he took over Mansebo and founded the Daehan Shinmun. His other works include Voice of the Demon (06-07) and Chiaksan (07). He was also a pioneer of modern drama, and was active in the cultural field, writing and performing plays such as Silver World (08) for the Engakusha Society, but he also played a major political role as secretary to Prime Minister Ri Wanyong.

朝鮮，大韓帝国時代の小説家，ジャーナリスト。号，菊初。李海朝，崔瓚植と並ぶ新小説の代表的作家。光武4 (1900) 年韓国政府留学生として政治学と法律学を学ぶ。日本の新派劇や小説に親しみ，帰国後は『万歳報』の主筆となり，同紙に新小説『血の涙』 (06) を連載。この小説は従来の「古典小説」の文体とテーマを完全に脱皮した作品で，朝鮮近代文学の出発の契機となった。同 11年『万歳報』を引受けて『大韓新聞』を創刊。作品はほかに『鬼の声』 (06～07) ，『雉岳山』 (07) などがある。新劇の開拓者でもあり，円覚社を中心に『銀世界』 (08) などを自作自演して文化面で活躍したが，政治的にも李完用首相の秘書として活動した。
