[Properties of parts of speech]
(1) In many languages, a word can change its form (part of it) depending on where it appears, with or without a certain change in meaning. This is called inflection (conjugation, declension). If two words that show inflection have the same inflection characteristics (not the sound form of the part that changes due to inflection, but the characteristics of the inflection as a whole), they can be said to belong to the same part of speech (or at least to two parts of speech that are closely related), and two words with different inflection characteristics, or one word that shows inflection and one word that does not, can be said to belong to different parts of speech (or at least to different subcategories (see below)). This is because there is no reason why a word must have an inflection of this nature just because it expresses this or that thing, and therefore the commonality or difference in the characteristics of inflection (including the presence or absence) cannot be explained by the commonality or difference in the characteristics of the things it expresses, and so it can be said to be closely related to the classification of parts of speech of the language.
