Japanese: gooseberry
gooseberry

...The genus Gooseberry, which has about 150 species found mainly in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, produces mostly spherical, juicy berries, and several species have been cultivated as small fruit trees in Europe and North America. These currants used as fruit trees are broadly divided into currants, which have no thorns and many flowers in a raceme, and gooseberries, which usually have thorns and only a few flowers. Cultivation and improvement of gooseberries began after they were introduced to England about 700 years ago.
