Record of the Passion

Japanese:
Record of the Passion

A Buddhist book from the Yuan Dynasty in China. Six volumes. A collection of koans in which Wansho Gyoshu of the Soto sect freely commented on Wanshi Shogaku's (1090-1157) "Hyakusoku Wanshijuko". It is said to be one of the two great Zen works along with "Hekiganroku". It was completed after nine appeals over a seven-year period by Wansho's disciple Yelu Chucai (1190-1244), a senior official of the Yuan dynasty. Chucai wrote a preface in 1224 (the 19th year of the reign of Emperor Taizu) at Arima Castle in the Western Regions. It is an important book for considering the thought of the Chinese Soto sect, and the oldest extant version is the one that was collated and published in 1607 (the 35th year of the Wanli era), and all subsequent publications have used this book as the basis. There are many annotations by Tenkei Denson (1648-1735) from the Edo period, but these annotations are centered on "Hongzhi Shong Ko Hyakusoku" rather than commentaries on Bansho Yukihide's book. It was not until the Meiji era that "Juyongroku" began to be lectured in earnest, and many lecture books have been produced.
