...Especially after the armed clashes in the capital in November 1978, Chad fell into a state of war with armed groups fighting each other. In November 1979, with the mediation of neighboring countries, 13 factions in the country compromised and a transitional government of national unity led by the north was formed. However, as early as March 1980, fighting broke out between the faction of the interim government's president, Goukouni Oueddei, and the faction of Defense Minister Hissène Habré, also from the north, rekindling the civil war. In June, President Goukouni signed a friendship treaty with Libya and requested the intervention of the Libyan army, which in December defeated Habre's Northern Army (FAN).
