Born: November 30, 1854, Kostroma
[Died] December 19, 1925. British jurist and medieval historian born in Paris, Russia. Studied at Moscow University, and after teaching there became a professor at the same university. During his professorship he attempted to reform education methods, established university autonomy, and worked hard to expand public primary schools, but was not accepted by the authorities, so he moved to England in 1902. Since 1903 he has been professor of legal philosophy at Oxford University. He inherited the position of the British historical school of law. His main work is Villainage in England (1892).

ロシア生れのイギリスの法学者，中世史学者。モスクワ大学に学び，教員生活を経て同大学の教授となった。教授在任中，教育法の革新をはかり，大学の自治の確立，公立小学校の拡充に尽力したが，当局に入れられず，1902年にイギリスに渡った。 03年よりオックスフォード大学法哲学教授。イギリスの歴史法学派の立場を継承。主著『イギリスの農奴制度』 Villainage in England (1892) 。
