Tokyo Shimbun - Tokyo Shimbun

Japanese:
Tokyo Shimbun - Tokyo Shimbun

A daily newspaper published by the Tokyo headquarters of Chunichi Shimbun, aimed at readers in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. In August 1942 (Showa 17), the newspaper merged with the merger of Miyako Shimbun (which began as Konnichi Shimbun, first published in September 1884, and later renamed Miyako Shimbun) and Kokumin Shimbun (which was first published by Tokutomi Soho in February 1890), and was published as Tokyo Shimbun on October 1 of the same year. During the war, it developed as Tokyo's only evening newspaper from May 1944, and after World War II, it began publishing morning editions in March 1956 (Showa 31). However, from that time on, its pro-American, anti-communist editorial policy did not adapt to the changing urban readership, and it gradually became difficult to manage. In November 1963, it entered into a business partnership with Chubu Nippon Shimbun (now Chunichi Shimbun), and in October 1967, it transferred all newspaper publishing operations to that company. The paper has ambitious projects such as "This is the Special Report Department," which is published every day in the morning edition as a two-page spread, and "From Tokyo," which covers local topics in Tokyo. The editorial tone is strongly liberal, and the news tends to be thorough in reporting on minority human rights issues. The circulation is about 549,000 copies for the morning edition and about 244,000 copies for the evening edition (2010).
