The first academic society established in Japan, and the predecessor of the Mathematical Society of Japan. It was founded in September 1877 when mathematicians from all over Japan gathered together at the suggestion of Kanda Takahira. The first representatives were Kanda Takahira and Yanagi Narayoshi, and later Okamoto Norifumi became president. In November 1877, the society began publishing its journal, the Tokyo Mathematical Company Magazine. The first issue was a small magazine measuring 11cm wide, 16.5cm tall, and 36 pages sealed in a lid, but this was Japan's first academic journal. From issue 36 onwards, the magazine became larger.
