[Born] 1504/1505. Puy de Dome, Aiguesperres [Died] March 13, 1573. Belba, near Etampes, Essonne. French politician. He studied law in Padua and Bologna, and after returning to France, he became a candidacy at the Paris High Court in 1537, and served Marguerite of Navarre. He was appointed president of the Court of Accounts in 1555, and a chancellor by Catherine de Medici in 1560. As a humanist, he risked his life to advocate tolerance in order to ease the tension between the old and new factions. He also contributed to reforming the judicial system (royal decrees of 1561, 1563, and 1566). However, after the outbreak of the Wars of Religion, which began with the murder of Protestants in the town of Bassy, he was attacked by Catholics and retired to his own estate. He narrowly escaped the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
