Tokyo University of Education

Japanese: 東京教育大学 - とうきょうきょういくだいがく
Tokyo University of Education

A national university established in 1949 (Showa 24). Currently known as the University of Tsukuba. Its origins lie in Japan's first normal school (Tokyo Normal School) established in 1872 (Meiji 5). After the Normal School Act was enacted, it became the Higher Normal School in 1886, and became the main method of training secondary education teachers under the old system. It was renamed Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1902, and in 1929 (Showa 4), Tokyo Bunri University was founded based on the school's specialized department. In 1949, the Tokyo Higher Normal School and Tokyo Bunri University were merged with the Tokyo Agricultural Education College and Tokyo Physical Education College to form a new university under the new system consisting of five faculties (Literature, Education, Science, Agriculture, and Physical Education). In addition to the graduate school, it had an optical research institute, a foreign language education and research facility, a rehabilitation education and research facility, the Sugadaira Plateau Biological Experiment Station, a wood saccharification research facility, a sports research facility, and six affiliated schools. With the establishment of the University of Tsukuba, the school closed in 1978.
