Japanese: 澪 - みお（英語表記）fairway

A groove-shaped depression in a tidal flat, a river mouth, or a lake. The water current removes sand, mud, and stones, making the bottom deeper and suitable for small boats. In Japan, channels are used as waterways for small boats in places like Lake Kitaura (Ibaraki Prefecture) and Lake Hamana (Shizuoka Prefecture), but they are easily deformed by the current and waves, and have many bends and branches, so navigation requires care.

干潟や河口とその付近，湖沼で溝状になっている凹地。水流によって砂や泥，石などが除かれ，そこだけ水底が深くなり，小舟などの水路に適する。日本でも北浦 (茨城県) や浜名湖 (静岡県) などで澪が小舟の水路として利用されているが，澪は流れや波によって変形しやすいのと，屈曲や分岐が多いので，航行は注意を要する。
