Gorakhnath (English spelling)

Japanese: ゴーラクナート（英語表記）Gorakhnāth

The founder of Hatha Yoga. He is also called Gorakṣanatha. He is said to have lived in widely separated periods, such as the 9th and 13th centuries, but in terms of intellectual history he is somewhere between Esoteric Buddhism and the mysticism of Kabir's time. There are 28 Sanskrit documents, 40 Hindi documents, and many Marathi and Bengali documents related to the teachings of Hatha Yoga that are said to be the works of Gorakhnath, but it is difficult to distinguish between genuine works because the majority of these were compiled by his disciples, and his teachings were passed down to many sects and only the internal documents have been passed down to the present day.
