A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is distributed throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and grows in mountainous areas. It has a thick rhizome underground, and the aboveground stem is thick, square-columnar, 50-100 cm tall, with the lower part woody. The leaves are opposite, oblong, 10-20 cm long, yellow-green, and dull. Around August to September, spike-like inflorescences appear at the ends of the branches, and pale yellow flowers grow densely. Two to three flowers are enclosed in bracts, the tips of which are pointed like tails. The corolla is tubular with a lip-shaped tip, and four stamens and one pistil protrude outside the flower.
