Olympiad

…the first Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896, and have been held every four years since then. The four years from the year of the Games to the year before the next one are called the Olympiad, after the ancient Olympic Games (for more on the ancient Olympics, see the History of the Olympics below). The year 1896 was designated the first year of the First Olympiad, and the Olympic Games are held in the first year of each Olympiad.
