Nagasaki Main Line - Nagasaki Main Line

Japanese:
Nagasaki Main Line - Nagasaki Main Line

The name of the Kyushu Railway Company's track. It consists of 125.3 km of Tosu (Saga Prefecture) - Nagasaki (AC electrified, double track rate 36.8%) and 23.5 km of Kikitsu - Nagayo - Urakami in Nagasaki Prefecture (all single track). It is the main railway line in the Kyushu region that branches off from the Kagoshima Main Line at Tosu and passes through Saga, Hizen Yamaguchi, the Ariake Sea coast, Isahaya, etc. before reaching Nagasaki. It was built by Kyushu Railway and opened the Tosu - Nagasaki section between 1891 and 1905 (Meiji 24 - 38), but the route at that time passed through Takeo, Arita, Haiki, Omura Bayside, Nagayo, etc. It was nationalized in 1907 (Meiji 40), and when the track names were unified in 1909, it became the Nagasaki Main Line. In 1930 (Showa 5), the 1.1 km section between Nagasaki and Nagasaki Port was opened, but this line was established as a connection for passenger ships on the Shanghai route, and only connecting passenger trains and freight trains were operated, so Nagasaki Station was the terminus for regular trains (abolished in 1987). Between 1930 and 1934, the Ariake East and West lines, connecting Hizen-Yamaguchi and Isahaya via the Ariake Coast, were opened, and when the line was completed in 1934, it was incorporated into the Nagasaki Main Line. With this, the existing section between Hizen-Yamaguchi and Sasebo was incorporated into the Sasebo Line, and the section between Sasebo and Isahaya became the Omura Line. In addition, because the section between Kikitsu, Nagayo and Urakami had a steep gradient that was a bottleneck in transport, a new line was constructed to shortcut this section, passing under Mt. Hoba through the Nagasaki Tunnel (6,173 meters); it opened in 1972 and major trains began running on the new line. In 1976, the Tosu-Nagasaki section was electrified with AC power via this new line. Many trains, including limited express trains, run directly to Hakata via the Kagoshima Main Line. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, the line became part of Kyushu Railway Company.
