Born September 19, 1916. Became a professor at the University of Tokyo in 1958. Served as president of the Fermentation Industry Association and the International Union of Microbiological Societies. Known for his research into the use of microorganisms in the synthesis of steroid hormones. In 1979, he received the Japan Academy Prize for "Industrial Use of Microorganisms," and in 1980, France's Prix Roussel. Died August 23, 1988. Age 71. Born in Tokyo.
