1916-1988 A microbiologist from the Showa era.
Born September 19, 1916. Became a professor at the University of Tokyo in 1958. Served as president of the Fermentation Industry Association and the International Union of Microbiological Societies. Known for his research into the use of microorganisms in the synthesis of steroid hormones. In 1979, he received the Japan Academy Prize for "Industrial Use of Microorganisms," and in 1980, France's Prix Roussel. Died August 23, 1988. Age 71. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo Imperial University.

大正5年9月19日生まれ。昭和33年東大教授となる。発酵工業会会長,国際微生物学会連合会長などをつとめた。ステロイドホルモン合成への微生物利用の研究で知られる。54年「微生物の産業利用」で学士院賞,55年フランスのルッセル賞。昭和63年8月23日死去。71歳。東京出身。東京帝大卒。
