Separated the automobile division and established Tokyu Bus in 1991. 私鉄会社。1922年目黒蒲田電鉄設立,1934年池上電気鉄道を合併,1939年東京横浜電鉄を合併して東京横浜電鉄と改称,1942年小田急電鉄,京浜電気鉄道(→京浜急行電鉄)を合併して現社名に変更。1944年京王電気軌道(→京王電鉄)を合併したが,1948年東横百貨店(→東急百貨店),京王帝都電鉄,小田急電鉄,京浜急行電鉄を分離した。1991年自動車部を分離し東急バスを設立。東急グループの総本家で鉄道,不動産業を中心に遊園地,ホテルなどの事業も経営。東京と郊外および神奈川県を結ぶ路線をもち,田園都市線の延長とともに沿線の土地開発に力を注いでいる。また東横線横浜駅で横浜高速鉄道みなとみらい線と,田園都市線渋谷駅で東京地下鉄半蔵門線,同線を介して東武鉄道伊勢崎線・日光線と,東横線渋谷駅で東京地下鉄副都心線と,目黒線目黒駅で東京地下鉄南北線,都営地下鉄三田線と相互乗り入れしている。関連会社多数。路線は東横線(渋谷―横浜),田園都市線(渋谷―中央林間),大井町線(大井町―溝の口),目黒線(目黒―日吉),多摩川線(多摩川―蒲田),池上線(五反田―蒲田),こどもの国線,世田谷線。(→五島慶太)
