Japanese: トウギョ(闘魚) - トウギョ

A general term for aggressive fish in the family Acanthopteridae. Many are kept as ornamental fish. Well-known species include the Taiwan goldfish, native to Taiwan, and the Korean carp, native to the Korean peninsula, both of which are less than 10cm long. Males build floating nests by blowing viscous bubbles from their mouths to protect their eggs. The Taiwan goldfish is classified as endangered (Ministry of the Environment, 4th Red List). Bettas are sometimes called Togyo fish.

キノボリウオ科の闘争性が強い魚類の総称。観賞用に飼育されるものも多い。台湾原産のタイワンキンギョ，朝鮮半島原産のチョウセンブナなどが知られ，体長はともに10cm未満。雄は口から粘性の泡(あわ)を出して浮き巣を作り，卵を保護する。タイワンキンギョは絶滅危惧IA類（環境省第４次レッドリスト）。ベタをトウギョという場合もある。
