[Died] May 31, 1962. Tel Aviv, Israel. Nazi leader. One of the perpetrators of the mass murder of Jews (→ Holocaust). In 1932, he joined the Nazi Party and was later promoted to a senior SS officer. From 1942 onwards, he was one of the leaders of Adolf Hitler's campaign to eradicate the Jews. After World War II, he was arrested by the US military, but escaped in 1946. In 1958, he fled and settled in Argentina. On May 11, 1960, he was arrested by Israeli secret services and taken to Israel. In December 1961, he was sentenced to death by hanging, and in May 1962, his appeal to the Supreme Court was rejected and the sentence was carried out. The charges were crimes against the Jews, crimes against humanity, and crimes against war. Eichmann maintained his innocence to the end, claiming that he had only followed the laws and flag of his country and the laws of war. The Argentine government has lodged a strong protest against the illegal actions of the Israeli government on Argentine soil.
