…His first play, The Misanthropy (premiered in 1606; hereafter referred to as the year of premiere), was a comedy of temperament strongly influenced by B. Johnson, while his second, The Knight of the Shining Pestle (c. 1607), was an elaborate comedy that caricatured medieval chivalric romance, ridiculed the theater-going attitude of the public theater audience, and sneered at the ignorance of the middle class. His close collaboration with John Fletcher (1579-1625), which began around 1608 and continued until he married and retired from writing five years later, produced about ten highly unified works, and in later years the joint name of “Beaumont and Fletcher” came to be treated as if they were the name of a single author. …
