Heishuu Hosoi

A Confucian scholar of the Eclectic School in the late Edo period. Born to a farmer in Owari (Aichi Prefecture). His given name was Tokumin and his pen name was Seiko. He was commonly known as Jinzaburo and was also known as Nyorai Sanjin. He studied under Nakanishi Tan'en (1709-1752), a practical scholar of the Eclectic School in Nagoya, and after his teacher's death, he instructed his disciples. In 1745 (Enkyo 2), he visited Nagasaki and learned Chinese pronunciation from a Chinese person. In 1759 (Horeki 9), he opened a private school called Oumeikan in Edo. Heishu was famous as a guest teacher to Tokugawa Harusada (1728-1789), the heir of Saijo Domain, and to Uesugi Harunori (1759-1789), the lord of Yonezawa Domain. Heishu's Omeikan Isho was written based on his own educational practice and is an excellent treatise on education. In his later years, he became the president of Meirindo in the Owari Domain, and was involved in the administration and education of the domain.
