Suwa [city] - Suwa
A city in central Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. Its center is the Suwa Basin area, and the city developed on the eastern shore of Lake Suwa. In the early modern period, it was the castle town of the Suwa Domain. In 1872, the first Western-style mechanized silk mill in the prefecture was established, and it developed into the center of the silk industry. At the end of the Meiji period, the Chuo Main Line was opened, and after World War II, precision machinery industries such as clocks, cameras, and music boxes replaced silk manufacturing. It was designated a new industrial city in 1964, and the Chuo Expressway was opened in 1981. General machinery and electrical machinery industries have also developed. Shinshu miso and woodworking products are also produced. Kami-Suwa Onsen (simple spring, 65°C) springs on the eastern shore of the lake, and Kirigamine is located in the north, as well as the Kamisha Shrine of Suwa Taisha. 109.17 km2 . 51,200 people (2010).

長野県中央部の市。1941年市制。中心は諏訪盆地地区で,諏訪湖東岸に市街が発達。近世は諏訪藩の城下町であった。1872年県で最初の洋式機械製糸場が創設されて以後製糸工業の中心として発展,明治末に中央本線が開通,第2次大戦後は製糸に代わり時計,カメラ,オルゴールなどの精密機械工業が盛んになった。1964年新産都市に指定され,1981年中央自動車道が開通,一般機器,電気機器工業も発展している。信州みそ,木工品も産する。湖東岸に上諏訪温泉(単純泉,65℃)がわき,北部に霧ヶ峰があり,諏訪大社の上社もある。109.17km2。5万1200人(2010)。
