…Russian films were dominated by live-action stage plays and literary works based on novels by Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Turgenev, and others, influenced by French and German films. Thus, the cinematic heritage that the Soviet Union inherited from Imperial Russia was extremely poor, but Lenin, who recognized that film was the most important art from the early days of the revolution, signed a decree in August 19th to nationalize the entire film industry, and from the beginning of the civil war, military and political educational short films called “fronica” (documentary film, newsreel) or “agitka” (inflammatory film) began to be produced (later developed into full-length documentary films and became the basis of British documentary films).
