Gold and silver coins minted in the Edo period from 1837 to 1843 (Tenpo 8 to 14). Following the Tenpo famine, prices soared and the shogunate was in financial trouble, so they were recoined to shore up finances. The quality of the Goryoban, Koban, Ichibukin, Chogin, Mameban, and Ichibugin coins were made worse than that of the Bunsei gold and silver coins, and the enormous profits from the recoinage (deme) were stockpiled for emergency use. The only exception was the Oban coins minted in 1838, which were of the same quality as the Keicho Oban. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
