A former British protectorate along the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It was made up of independent Arab tribal groups under a treaty of protection with the UK. In 1967 it became part of the People's Republic of South Yemen when it gained independence, and later became part of present-day Yemen. It was under the Indian government until 1927, when it was transferred to the British Colonial Office and placed under the rule of the Governor of the Province of Aden, centred in the city of Aden. Administratively, it was divided into the Western Aden Protectorate and the Eastern Aden Protectorate, the former of which was led by a British magistrate in Aden, whose staff advised the local chiefs. The latter, also known as Hadramaut, was under the magistrate in Mukalla. The island of Socotra also belonged to this protectorate.
