Year of death: May 22, 1926 Year of birth: Meiji 9.4 (1876) A jiuta and sokyoku performer from Osaka during the Meiji and Taisho periods. His real name was Masuda Juzo. He became blind around the age of five, and became a disciple of Tatezaki Kengyo at the age of eight. After his teacher's death, he studied under Tatezawa Kodo Masuichi. In 1889 (Meiji 22), he took the name Tateyama Eiju. He was a teacher at the Osaka Municipal School for the Blind until 1913 (Taisho 2). He is one of the leading composers of new sokyoku (new Meiji songs), which were composed in great numbers during the Meiji period, especially in Osaka, and is known for the so-called "tsurushanmono" (traditional Japanese poetry), which uses chord accompaniment by the left hand. He was also good at waka poetry, and composed many songs with his own lyrics. His representative works include "Hitodori no Kyoku," "Kongoseki," "Kaisen Trumpet no Shirabe," and "Shin Sugoro."
