German Reformer. Initially a Dominican monk who was devoted to Erasmus, he became a Protestant reformer after sympathizing with Luther. He led the Strasbourg Reformation and worked to unite the Protestant camp that had been divided by the Eucharist Controversy, and to reunite Catholics and Protestants. In his later years, he was driven out of Germany for opposing the religious policies of Emperor Charles V, and went into exile in England, where he lectured on the Bible as a professor at Cambridge University, contributing to the English Reformation.
