A wild sheep of the Bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla. It is 1.1-1.3m long and 70cm tall at the shoulder. Both sexes have large spiral horns, and fully grown males can reach nearly 1m in length. Its fur is reddish brown, and males have white spots from the center of their backs to their sides. Native to the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia, it lives in small herds in mountainous regions. It eats grass and leaves. It is thought to be the ancestor of domesticated sheep. 偶蹄目ウシ科。体長 1.1~1.3m,肩高 70cm内外の野生のヒツジ。雌雄とも大きな渦巻状の角をもち,成長した雄のものでは 1m近くになるものもある。体毛は赤茶色で,雄の背中の中央から体側にかけて白色斑がある。地中海のコルシカ島,サルジニア島原産で,山岳地帯に小群をつくってすむ。草や木の葉を食べる。家畜化されたヒツジの原種と考えられている。なお,ヨーロッパ各地では,移入されたものが野生化している。
