Vladimir-Suzdal Principality

The city's history began in 1108 when Vladimir Monomakh built a fortress here. In 1157 Andrei Bogolyubsky made it the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality (see the entry for Vladimir's Grand Duchy). It developed especially when he made it the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality (see the entry for Vladimir's Grand Duchy). In contrast to Kiev, the capital of Russia (Kievan Rus), which was already in decline at the time, the city gained great political significance. In 1299, the head of the Russian Church, the Metropolitan of Kiev, also left Kiev and established its residence here.
