A filamentous colonial cyanobacterium that lives as plankton in the ocean and often blooms in large numbers, causing red tides. It is also known by the Japanese name Aiakashio. The colonies are bundle-shaped, cluster-shaped, or spherical, and are basically made up of an aggregation of cell filaments of the same shape as those of the Oscillaria genus. It commonly grows in tropical and subtropical seas, and red tides can reach the waters near Japan on the Kuroshio Current. The name of the Red Sea, which stretches from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, is said to come from the fact that the sea turns red when this cyanobacterium blooms in large numbers.
