An administrative agency in charge of radio waves, including broadcasting, which existed for a short time in occupied Japan after World War II. It was established on June 1, 1950, as an external bureau of the Prime Minister's Office, based on the Radio Regulatory Commission Establishment Law, at the same time as the law came into force. Like the Fair Trade Commission, it was a so-called administrative commission that exercised its authority independently under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister. It was established at the suggestion of General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (GHQ) as an institutional measure to ensure the fairness and political neutrality of radio administration, including broadcasting. During the process of drafting the establishment bill, the Yoshida Cabinet insisted on amending it, claiming that the commission's independence from the government was too strong, but the matter was eventually settled by accepting the wishes of the GHQ, in the form of a personal letter request from MacArthur.
