A group of Native Americans living in the southeastern part of North America, in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Their language is Iroquoian. Culturally they were very close to the neighboring Creek people, but after contact with white people they actively adopted white culture. In 1821, a mixed-race young man named Sequoyah created a syllabary, making them the only Native American people in North America with a written language. In the late 19th century, they were forcibly relocated to a designated reservation in Oklahoma. The population is estimated to be about 50,000 in Oklahoma and about 3,000 in North Carolina.
