An independent building for keeping horses or a room inside a house for keeping horses (and sometimes cows) is also called maya. Stables on farms for keeping farm horses and stables on samurai residences, shrines, and temples for keeping riding horses have different structures. Farm stables are divided into an inner stable inside the main house and an outer stable built separately, but the curved-roofed stables of the southern part of the country are a style that was established by connecting the outer stable to the main house. Also, the chumon-zukuri style, which is common in areas with heavy snowfall along the Sea of Japan coast, was established by moving the stables that were originally inside the main house to the chumon gate, and is somewhere between the two.
