Ishizuka Toyokaishi

A scholar of miscellany in the late Edo period. His name was Jubei, commonly known as Kamakuraya Jubei. Hyoukakeshi was the pen name, and he also went by the names Karashiya, Toyotei, and Shukodo. He was a native of Edo. He worked in Kanda Toshimacho under the name Kamakuraya, grinding mustard seeds into powder. He was also friends with Santo Kyoden, Ryutei Tanehiko, and Kimura Mokuro, and was influenced by them to collect and transcribe rare books related to literature, theater, and pleasure quarters from the early modern period onwards, and to study manners and customs. His books include "Kabuki Chronicle Continued," "Kabuki Juhachiban Kou," "Okaba Yukaku Kou," "Yoshiwara Daikan," and "Hyoukakeshi Nikki," and his collection of books was known as the "Kyoukakeshiya Books."

江戸後期の雑学者。名は重兵衛,通称鎌倉屋十兵衛。豊芥子はその号で,別にからし屋,豊亭,集古堂などと号した。江戸の人。神田豊島町で鎌倉屋を名として芥子を粉にすることを業とする傍ら,山東京伝や柳亭種彦,木村黙老らと交遊し,その影響で近世以降の文芸書や演劇,遊里関係の珍籍を収集,書写し,風俗研究を志した。著書に『歌舞伎年代記続編』『歌舞伎十八番考』『岡場遊廓考』『吉原大鑑』『豊芥子日記』などがあり,その蔵書は芥子屋本として知られた。
