The Irrawaddy is the largest river in Myanmar, running from north to south and emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Its total length is 2,160 km, and its drainage area is approximately 430,000 km2. Its name is said to be derived from the Hindi words Irabati, meaning "elephant river," or Erabathy, meaning "big river." The Numaika River and the Malika River join together 40 km north of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, to form the Irrawaddy. There is evidence that the upstream river valley was used as a route from Yunnan in ancient times, and the river remains an important transportation route to this day.

ミャンマーの国土を北から南へ縦断してベンガル湾に注ぐ，同国最大の河川。全長2160km。流域面積約43万km2。その語源はヒンディー語で〈象の川〉を意味するイーラーバティーとも，〈大きな川〉を意味するエーラーバティーとも言われる。カチン州の州都ミッチーナーの北40kmの地点でヌマイカ(恩梅開)川とマリカ(邁立開)川が合流してイラワジ川となる。上流の河谷は古来，雲南からのルートとして利用された痕跡があり，川は現在に至るまで重要な交通路となっている。
