Italian female novelist. Born to a wealthy family in Nuoro, Sardinia. Self-taught, she began her literary career in her mid-teens. After marrying and moving to Rome in 1900, she became the mother of two children, and continued to write a huge number of works in between her housewife duties. Her life is detailed in her autobiographical novel "Cosima" (1937, published posthumously). Most of her works feature bandits who hole up on Mount Gennargentu in her hometown of Sardinia, and the dramatic events that occur in their unique, closed society. However, it would be impossible to discuss Deledda's literature without taking into account the fact that these works were popular among the petty bourgeoisie of the time as popular novels, and essentially supported the fascist regime. His representative works include "Elias Poltl" (1903), "Ashes" (1904), "Kidzuta" (1908), and "Reeds Swaying in the Wind" (1913). In 1926, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
