ink

Japanese: インク
ink
〘noun〙 (ink)⸨ink⸩ (During the Meiji period, "ink" was predominant, but later "ink" became the norm) A colored liquid used for writing and printing. Usually refers to ① when used alone. ① A liquid for writing with a pen or fountain pen. There are red, green, black, blue, and indigo blue, but the most widely used indigo blue (blue-black) is made by adding ferrous sulfate to tannic acid. ※Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun - July 2, 1874 (Meiji 7) "However, pens, ink, etc., may be purchased separately." ② Printing ink. ※Black rice (1923)〈Nagai Tatsuo〉"The damp smell of lead, paper, and ink that is peculiar to a printing company." ③ A colored liquid for writing with ballpoint pens, felt-tip pens, and various other writing implements. [Etymology] Regarding the two word forms, "ink" and "ink," there are two theories: one is that the original word for "ink" (to) is the Dutch word "inkt," which was introduced in the mid-Edo period and became established, and then "ink," which is of English origin, spread; the other is that the influence of the Dutch was not actually large, and that although both have English origins, "ink" first became established, and then "ink," which is a phonetic form of "ink," became established.
