An alpine plant of the rose family with yellow flowers, first discovered in Japan on Mt. Tateyama (illustration). Found on sunny gravel ground in the alpine zone, it grows 5-10cm tall, with creeping, woody stems. The leaves are trifoliate and compound, with long stalks. The leaflets are wedge-shaped and have 3-5 sawtooth tips. In summer, a flower stalk emerges from the tip of the stem, with a corymb-like inflorescence and very small flowers. There are five yellow petals, the sepals being slightly longer. There are five stamens and 5-20 pistils. The fruit is acaryophyte. It is rarely found in the high mountains of the Chubu region of Honshu and Hokkaido, and is widely distributed in the cold zones and high mountains of the Northern Hemisphere, from Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands through Siberia to Europe, and from Alaska to Greenland, and is considered a relic of the Ice Age.
