Insectivore, Soricidae. Body length about 80 cm. Body fur changes between summer and winter, dark brown in summer and brown in winter. Its forelimbs are the largest of any shrew, and its claws are powerful. It is better adapted to tunnel life than other shrews. It is found in the Ussuri region, northeastern China, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and Hokkaido, and also lives on Daikoku Island, Rebun Island, and Rishiri Island. In Hokkaido, it is often found in lowland pastures, grasslands, and bamboo fields, and eats earthworms, insects, spiders, etc.
