Telepathy - Telepathy (English spelling)

Japanese: テレパシー - てれぱしー(英語表記)telepathy
Telepathy - Telepathy (English spelling)

A term in parapsychology. Sensing the mental contents (thoughts, perceptions, emotions, etc.) of others under conditions that are thought to be completely absent of language, gestures, facial expressions, or other sensory clues. The term was coined by British researcher FWH Myers (1843-1901) in the late 19th century to replace thought-transference and to include an alternative meaning to the soul hypothesis.

In the 18th century, it was observed that subjects under hypnosis could sense the tastes and pains experienced by the practitioner, and that distant subjects could be induced into hypnosis or awakened by mere thought. At the end of the 19th century, the British Society for Psychical Research published the results of a survey which showed that when a person unaware of their death had died, they experienced hallucinations about the deceased with greater than chance frequency. Experimental proof of telepathy was carried out by Rhein, and was successful under conditions of pure telepathy which excluded the possibility of clairvoyance or precognition. Telepathy, along with clairvoyance and precognition, is included in ESP.
