A marriage in which the couple lives in the bride's family. Also known as shoseikon. The opposite of 'yokeniri' marriage. Often seen in matrilineal societies. In Japan, under a patrilineal system, this was the predominant form of marriage until the Heian period. Adoption also belongs to this category. It was common until recent times in places where women's labor was valued, such as ama (woman diver) villages, and in Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture, but in general, most couples would move to the groom's family after a certain number of years. → Tsumadoi marriage → Related topics Ashiiri marriage | First groom's entry Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
