…The Romantics who followed him include, for example, the German Schack von Staffeldt, Grundtby, Ingemann, and Hauck. The mid-19th century produced many writers who would later become classics in Denmark and abroad, including Bricker, a master of storytelling and a pioneer of dialect literature, the literary critic Heibär, Andersen, immortal as the founder of fairy tale literature, Frederik Paludan-Müller (1809-76), the literary thinker Kierkegaard, and Meïr Aron Goldschmidt (1819-87), who enriched Danish literature with Jewish elements. In the 1970s, the literary critic Brandes introduced French and British naturalism, and he gave birth to the ``modern conversionists'' such as the atheist Jacobsen, Sophus Schandorph (1836-1901), who excelled in psychological description, and Drachmann and Gjellerup for a time. …
